Svenska Dagligen: Why I Reprogrammed Learning Swedish
Learning Swedish is fun – at least at first. Like many others, I started with apps such as Duolingo. The introduction was motivating and playful, but after a while it became somewhat predictable. Repeating sentences I rarely need in everyday life eventually felt more like keeping busy with an app than making real progress.
I wanted a more efficient solution that worked completely offline and gave me full control over the code and content. So I started building.
Clean Code as the Foundation
As a developer, it mattered to me that the app not only worked but was technically sound. Look at its structure and you will find strict Clean Code criteria, rather than monolithic chaos:
- Modular architecture: The logic is clearly separated. The
coredirectory contains the essential components, including the SRS (Spaced Repetition System), storage management (storage.js) and synchronisation logic. - Separation of concerns: Features such as audio management and search exist as independent modules. This makes the app maintainable and testable, with excellent performance and no unnecessary baggage.
The Features: AI Power and No Signal Required
What makes Svenska Dagligen technically distinctive? Here are the implementation highlights:
1. The AI-Generated Database
Instead of entering thousands of words manually, I used an AI pipeline. Python scripts and large language models created the entire database. The clever part: the AI did more than translate – it generated example sentences that meaningfully cover specific grammatical patterns. AI-powered, but refined through automated audits.
2. Genuine Offline Capability (PWA)
Nothing is more annoying than a learning app that stops working without 5G. Svenska Dagligen is designed throughout as a Progressive Web App. A sophisticated service worker caches all resources. Once the app has loaded, you can learn in flight mode or in a Swedish forest. Your progress is stored locally and synchronised automatically the next time you connect.
3. Dynamic Speech Output
Integrated speech output helps you develop a feel for the language. The system intelligently detects which audio files are already available locally and, when necessary, generates high-quality speech on the fly via a TTS interface.
The Self-Healing Workflow: AI-Powered Feedback
A particularly important part of the app is the way it learns. I did not want a static system that carried errors around for years, so I implemented an automated feedback loop:
When users encounter an error in the app or report a problem with a word, the report enters my system. Rather than checking every entry manually, I regularly run AI-assisted workflows (process_reports_ai.py).
This process analyses the reports, checks them against the existing database and suggests corrections. Once validation is complete, the database is corrected automatically and distributed to all users at the next sync. With help from the community and AI, the app effectively improves itself.
Conclusion
Svenska Dagligen is my way of combining software craftsmanship with modern language technology. No frills – just a tool that works, offline, quickly and precisely.
The app is currently available as a web app at svenska-dagligen.de and will also be coming to the Google Play Store soon.
Good luck with your learning – Lycka till!
